The Castle Of Mey

Posted on

The Castle of Mey  is Scotland's most northerly inhabited castle and can be found 6 miles west of John O'Groats. Constructed in 1573 it was purchased by The Queen Mother in 1953 and became one of her favourite homes. To this day its still visted annually by Prince Charles over the summer months.

The Castle and gardens are open to the public and is well worth a visit. A leisurely drive from the Old Manse will take approximately 2 hours.

We stayed at the Old Manse for one night when riding the NC500 by motorcycle. It was excellent from beginning to end. A very lovely welcome from Neale and Linda who made us a cup of tea as soon as we got there. We sat and had a chat in the guest lounge. The house is stunning. Attention to detail is the order of the day. You will want for nothing. Breakfast was wonderful. You won't find paper napkins or foil wrapped butter here, everything is done properly. Linda even packed us a couple of her home made cheese scones for later in the day and they were delicious. I have rated this B&B as mid-range price but it is luxury accommodation
