Just 10 miles south of Wick on the A99 there is a hidden gem. It's so secret that the Scottish Tourist Board don't even provide a sign post, The Whaligoe Steps.
Over 300 steps are carved into the cliff side taking you down to a small sheltered cove. Herring were landed here and carried in baskets up the steep incline. If you are doing the NC500 it's well worth breaking your journey. There is a cafe at the top to revive you after dragging yourself to the top
